Phonics

This week in phonics, we have been practicing the vowel teams  au /aw/, aw /aw/, augh /aw/ (e.g., crawl, lawn, caught). Our spelling test based on these vowel teams, will take place on Monday, June 1, 2026. Please encourage your child to practice these words!

Next week we will be practicing the vowel team "ea" with a short e sound (e.g., ready, health, breakfast) and the vowel team "a" with a short o sound (e.g., want, swan, watch). A new Roll and Read sheet will be sent out on Monday, June 1, 2026.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What are the different spellings for the "aw" sound?
  • Can you tell me a word for each different spelling?
  • Can you use each of these words in a sentence?

Literacy

Students have been working on a project in which they write about where they would take our class pet, Marnie, for a day adventure. Next week, they will have the opportunity to create digital presentations based on their writing and present them to the class.

As students have become pros at procedural writing, they have also been working on creating their own procedural writing booklets to teach others how to do or make something.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Where would you take Marnie for a day?
  • Why would you take Marnie there?
  • What is your procedural writing book about?
Math

Students have been learning how to use base ten blocks for addition and subtraction with without regrouping, as well as addition with regrouping.

Below are some videos that are quite helpful!

Addition without Regrouping (using base ten blocks)

Subtraction without Regrouping (using base ten blocks)

Addition With Regrouping (using base ten blocks)

Ask your child the following questions:

  • Can you add 23 + 41 using the base ten blocks?
  • Can you use the base ten blocks to do 78-15?
  • How could you us the base ten blocks to solve 54 + 37?
Bus Registration for 2026-27 School Year

Transportation Registration is now available through your CBE Account.

Families must register each year if they require busing for their student.

Families must register by Sunday, June 14, 2026 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year.

CBE will accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed.

Confirmed routes are posted in August. For those who register after the June 14 deadline, it may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.

Transportation can be cancelled with no financial impact by submitting the cancellation form by Sept. 30, 2026. Fees will be added to accounts in October 2026.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity? This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
