  April 20-April 23

Phonics

In phonics this week, students focused on reviewing vowel teams that we have been practicing recently (e.g., ea, ee, ay, igh, ow). Students have acquired a good amount of knowledge when it comes to understanding which words will use the different vowel teams.

Next week we will be practicing the vowel teams u /oo/, oo /oo/ (e.g., pull, push, book, foot). A new Roll and Read sheet was sent home on Thursday, April 23, 2026 to enforce these vowel teams.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you choose 3 of the vowel teams (e.g., ea, igh, ow) and list 2 words for each of those vowel teams?
  • Can you tell me 3 different sentences that include one of these words in each?
  • Can you try writing these sentences?

Literacy

This week students began learning about procedural writing. Procedural writing is a type of writing that tells someone how to do something. It gives clear steps in the correct order so the reader can follow along easily. We use procedural writing when we explain how to make something, how to play a game, or how to complete a task. We will be diving more into this next week!

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What is procedural writing?
  • What are three different things that you might do a procedural writing piece on (e.g., how to brush your teeth, how to make a sandwich)?
  • Why is it important to put things in order when doing procedural writing?
Students also wrote about what they would do if they were a butterfly. They really enjoyed using their imagination to come up with different ideas!

Math

We have been learning about the associative property. The associative property is a math rule that works with addition. It means that when we are adding three or more numbers, it doesn’t matter how we group them as the answer will stay the same. For example, (2 + 3) + 4 gives the same answer as 2 + (3 + 4). Even if we change the way the numbers are grouped, the total does not change. This helps us add numbers in different ways and still get the same result.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Does the order of numbers matter when adding them together? Why or why not?
  • What are the different ways you can add 7 + 2 + 3?
  • Can you come up with your own number sentence (like the one in the question above)?
Grade 2 Spring Concert

The Grade 2 spring concert went great and was a wonderful success. The students put in a lot of effort practicing their songs and performances, and it really showed on stage. They performed with enthusiasm, confidence, and pride, making the event enjoyable for everyone who attended. It was clear how much hard work and preparation went into the concert, and the students should feel very proud of what they accomplished.

Muddy Conditions

With the muddy conditions, please send your students with an extra pair of clothes in case they need them (ie socks and pants especially!).  Rubber boots are a great help for keeping us dry as we enjoy the outdoors.

Toys at School- NO!

This is a reminder that students are to leave their toys at home, including Pokeman cards and stuffies. Toys are a distraction in the classroom where the focus is on learning. As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.

On May 7, McKenzie Highlands School will be hosting their Open House to all families in the community. The event will run from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Please see the attachment for more information.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity? This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
