March 30-April 2
Phonics
This week in phonics, students continued practicing the long E sound spelled “ee,” “ea,” and “ey” (e.g., see, beach, donkey). We spent more time reading, spelling, and identifying these patterns in words to help build confidence and accuracy. Student's had their spelling test on Thursday, April 2, 2026. This spelling test will be handed back on Monday, April 6, 2026. Please review the vocabulary with your child.
Next week we will be working on long vowel teams "oa," "ow," "oe" (e.g., low, soap, woe). A Roll and Read sheet has been sent home to practice these spellings. Our next spelling test will be on Thursday, April 9, 2026).
- Can you think of a word that uses oa, ow, or oe to make the long O sound?
- Where do you usually see oa, ow, or oe in a word (beginning, middle, or end)?
- Can you read a word with oa, ow, or oe and use it in a sentence?
Literacy
This week, students focused on writing strong closing sentences to finish their paragraphs. We learned that a closing sentence helps wrap up a piece of writing by reminding the reader of the main idea and providing a clear sense of ending. Students practiced restating their topic in a new way, adding a final thought, and making sure their writing felt complete.
Ask your child the following questions:- What makes a closing sentence strong?
- Can you think of a good closing sentence for the paragraph you wrote about the summer?
- How does a closing sentence help the reader understand your writing?
We have been practicing addition using a hundreds chart to help build number sense. Students are learning how numbers change as they move around the chart—for example, moving right increases a number by 1, moving left decreases it by 1, moving down increases a number by 10, and moving up decreases it by 10.
Using the hundreds chart also helps students understand how to break numbers into tens and ones, making addition strategies easier and more efficient.
- What happens to a number when you move right, left, up, or down on a hundreds chart?
- How can breaking a number into tens and ones help you add?
- Can you show how to solve an addition problem using a hundreds chart?
