 April 27-April 30

Phonics

This week in phonics, students reviewed vowel teams that produce the /oo/ sound, such as “u” and “oo.” They practiced reading and identifying these sounds in words like full, bush, look, and good, helping to strengthen their decoding and pronunciation skills. They completed their spelling test based on these vowel teams on Thursday, April 30, 2026. This will be handed back on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Next week we will be practicing the vowel teams oo /ū/ (e.g., pool, scoop, zoom). A new Roll and Read sheet was sent home on Thursday, May 5, 2026 to enforce this vowel teams.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What is the difference the long "oo" (e.g., food, mood) sound and the short "oo" sound (e.g., put, hood)?
  • How can you tell when to use each of these pronunciations?
  • Can you tell me a sentence using a word with the long "oo" sound and another sentence using a word with the short "oo" sound?

Literacy

This week we focussed on phonics and math. Next week we will have a greater literacy focus.

Math

This week, we continued practicing the associative property in addition. This rule shows that when adding three or more numbers, changing how the numbers are grouped does not affect the total. For example, (5 + 2) + 6 gives the same answer as 5 + (2 + 6). Even though the grouping is different, the sum remains the same. Students explored different ways to group numbers and shared their thinking as they solved problems.

(6 + 5) + 1 = 12

     11  + 1 = 12

x x x x x x (6)

x x x x x (5)

x (1)

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you come up with a number sentence like the one above?
  • Can you draw it out using x's?
  • Can you change the order of the numbers?
May The 4th Be With You!

As well, toys can get lost , misplaced, or fall into someone else’s hands. The school is not responsible for dealing with such issues or replacement of articles gone missing.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity? This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
