 May 11-May 14

Phonics

This week in phonics, students reviewed vowel teams ew /ū/, ui /ū/ ue /ū/ (e.g., chew, bruise, due). They did a great job recognizing words that had similar patterns in them. They completed their spelling test based on these vowel teams on Thursday, May 14, 2026. This will be handed back on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Next week we will be practicing compound words (e.g., notebook, suitcase, classroom). A new Roll and Read sheet was sent home on Thursday, May 14, 2026 to enforce these words. Students will have their spelling test based on these vowel teams on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you tell me two words that have the "ew" spelling?
  • What are two words that have the "ui" spelling?
  • Can you come up with two words that have the "ue" spelling?

Literacy

Students had so much fun writing step-by-step instructions on how to make an ice cream cone! They were very excited and eager to share their ideas while practicing procedural writing. Next week, students will be writing about how to make a pizza, and then they will put all of their work together to create their own procedural writing booklet on a topic of their choice.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you tell me the steps to make an ice cream cone?
  • Why is it important to give clear instructions when doing procedural writing?
  • Why must you write down the ingredients or materials needed?
Math

This week, we worked on the “breaking apart” strategy for subtraction. This strategy helps students subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by first making a friendly number or a multiple of 10.

For example, in the problem 32 - 5, students know that taking away 2 will bring them to 30. They can break the 5 apart into 2 and 3. First, they subtract 2 from 32 to make 30, and then they subtract the remaining 3 to get 27.

The video below explains the strategy:

We then moved on to using the single break apart strategy for addition and subtraction. This strategy involves breaking the smaller number into tens and ones, then adding the tens and ones to the larger number or subtracting the tens and ones from the larger number.

The videos below explain both of the methods:

Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you solve 22 - 5 using the multiple of 10 strategy (breaking apart)?
  • How do you break up a number into tens and ones?
  • How does breaking up a number into tens and ones help you to add or subtract?
Victoria Day (Long Weekend)

We hope all students have a wonderful Victoria Day long weekend! We look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed and ready for more learning after the holiday. Have a safe and happy Victoria Day!

Late Arrivals

We have had an increased number of late arrivals in the mornings.

When students are late, it disrupts their class and the learning that is underway. Coming late to school is also a difficult transition for the late student - it can be stressful for them.

In the event that your child needs to arrive late to school, we would ask that only the student enters the building. Adults do not need to come into the office to check their child in. This is especially important first thing in the morning when there is a high volume of traffic in the office.

For your convenience, we have relaxed/soft entry every morning at 7:50 am. We recommend trying to arrive anytime between 7:50 - 8:00 am so that your child has time to settle in class before starting their day of learning. Grade team teachers will always be at designated grade entry/exit doors at this time to welcome students into the school. Please remember that there is no teacher supervision on the playground during soft entry or after school at dismissal time.

Fun Lunch

The next Fun Lunch will be held on Wednesday May 27th.

Fun Lunch is only for grades 1-4 and our EES students.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity? This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
