Phonics
This week in phonics, students reviewed vowel teams ew /ū/, ui /ū/ ue /ū/ (e.g., chew, bruise, due). They did a great job recognizing words that had similar patterns in them. They completed their spelling test based on these vowel teams on Thursday, May 14, 2026. This will be handed back on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Next week we will be practicing compound words (e.g., notebook, suitcase, classroom). A new Roll and Read sheet was sent home on Thursday, May 14, 2026 to enforce these words. Students will have their spelling test based on these vowel teams on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
- Can you tell me two words that have the "ew" spelling?
- What are two words that have the "ui" spelling?
- Can you come up with two words that have the "ue" spelling?
Literacy
Students had so much fun writing step-by-step instructions on how to make an ice cream cone! They were very excited and eager to share their ideas while practicing procedural writing. Next week, students will be writing about how to make a pizza, and then they will put all of their work together to create their own procedural writing booklet on a topic of their choice.
- Can you tell me the steps to make an ice cream cone?
- Why is it important to give clear instructions when doing procedural writing?
- Why must you write down the ingredients or materials needed?
This week, we worked on the “breaking apart” strategy for subtraction. This strategy helps students subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by first making a friendly number or a multiple of 10.
For example, in the problem 32 - 5, students know that taking away 2 will bring them to 30. They can break the 5 apart into 2 and 3. First, they subtract 2 from 32 to make 30, and then they subtract the remaining 3 to get 27.
The video below explains the strategy:

We then moved on to using the single break apart strategy for addition and subtraction. This strategy involves breaking the smaller number into tens and ones, then adding the tens and ones to the larger number or subtracting the tens and ones from the larger number.
The videos below explain both of the methods:
- Can you solve 22 - 5 using the multiple of 10 strategy (breaking apart)?
- How do you break up a number into tens and ones?
- How does breaking up a number into tens and ones help you to add or subtract?
