Phonics
This week in phonics, we have been practicing compound words (e.g. football, toothbrush, rainbow). A compound word is made when two smaller words are joined together to make a new word. Each word has its own meaning, but when they are combined, they create a new word with a new meaning.
As our spelling test did not take place on Thursday, May 14, 2026. As a result, we will be having it on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Next week we will be practicing the vowel teams au /aw/, aw /aw/, augh /aw/ (e.g., notebook, suitcase, August, pause, straw, taught). A new Roll and Read sheet will be sent home on Monday and the spelling test for these vowel teams will take place on the following Monday (June 1).
- What are compound words?
- Can you tell me 5 compound words that you know?
- Can you use each of these words in a sentence?
Literacy
Students have been practicing organizing their writing by presenting events in a clear and logical order. They recently wrote about their weekend experiences, focusing on sequencing their ideas from beginning to end. Students are continuing to develop their understanding of how important it is to include meaningful detail in their writing to help the reader better understand their ideas. They are also working on writing clear, complete sentences, making their writing easier to read and understand.
- Why is it important to add details to your writing?
- How can you edit your own work?
- When do we use capital letters in our writing?
We then reviewed the single break apart strategy for addition and subtraction. This strategy involves breaking the smaller number into tens and ones, then adding the tens and ones to the larger number or subtracting the tens and ones from the larger number.
We also practiced counting forwards and backwards in tens and ones using a hundred chart and a number line to help support our understanding.
- Do the numbers get higher or lower as you move down a hundreds chart?
- How can you use a hundreds chart to help you add 17 + 35?
- How can you use a number line to help you add 42 + 28?
