June 8-June 11
Phonics
This week, a new Roll and Read sheet was not handed out. Instead, we focused on developing reading comprehension skills by answering questions based on a text. We worked on identifying important information, finding evidence within the text to support answers, and thinking more deeply about what we read.
A major focus was on making inferences and connections. Students practiced using clues from the text, along with their own background knowledge, to understand information that was not directly stated. We also explored how characters think, feel, and behave by examining their actions, words, and choices throughout the text. Students were encouraged to find specific details that helped them better understand the characters and their experiences.
On Monday, students will receive a new Roll and Read sheet based on the vowel teams oi /oi/, oy /oi/ (e.g., coin, choice, employ). Their spelling test will take place on Monday, June 22nd.
Ask your child the following questions when reading:
- How does one of the characters feel? Why do they feel that way?
- What is a connection you can make to the story? Have you experienced something similar?
- If you could change one part of the story, what part would you change and why?
Literacy
Students had the opportunity to write friendly letters to both a classmate and to myself. They focused on including all the key components of a letter, such as the date, greeting, body, closing, and signature.
We then transitioned to opinion writing, where students explored and expressed their opinions on a variety of engaging topics. For example, they considered questions such as, "Would you rather go to the zoo or an amusement park for a field trip?" Students practiced clearly stating their opinion and providing reasons to support their thinking.
Ask your child the following questions:
- What are the different parts of an opinion writing piece?
- Would you rather spend a day at the beach or a day at the mountains? Why?
- Would you rather visit outer space or explore the bottom of the ocean? Why?
Math
This week, we continued our learning about measurement. Students participated in hands-on activities involving tiling and iteration. Tiling is the process of using multiple units of measure that are the same, to measure the length of an object (e.g. linking cubes), without leaving any gaps or overlaps. Iteration involves repeatedly using the same unit of measure (but only one) to determine the length of an object.
Students had a great time exploring these concepts by measuring and comparing objects using a variety of math manipulatives. These activities help them to develop a deeper understanding of measurement and the importance of using consistent units.
Here is a video to support their learning: Measurement Video
Ask your child the following questions:
- What are some things that you measured in math this week?
- What tools or objects did you use to measure things?
- Can you show me how you can use the same object (only one) to measure things?
Show and Tell Presentations
Our Show and Tell presentations are going great! Our final day for presentations will be on Monday.
Marnie Presentations
Students have been working on digital presentations sharing where they would take our class pet, Marnie. They will have the opportunity to present their work to the class this week. We have been practicing at school to help build confidence and readiness.
Students are welcome to practice at home as well. Please encourage them to speak in a clear, loud voice, avoid rushing, and present with confidence. Their presentations can be found in our Google Classroom for at-home practice.
Bus Registration for 2026-27 School Year
Transportation Registration is now available through your
CBE Account.
Families must register each year if they require busing for their student.
Families must register by Sunday, June 14, 2026 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year.
CBE will accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed.
Confirmed routes are posted in August. For those who register after the June 14 deadline, it may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.
Transportation can be cancelled with no financial impact by submitting the cancellation form by Sept. 30, 2026. Fees will be added to accounts in October 2026.
