 June 15-June 18

Phonics

This week, we practiced the vowel teams oi /oi/, oy /oi/ (e.g., join, spoil, enjoy). Students will have their spelling test based on these spellings on Monday, June 22, 2026. This will be the last spelling test for this school year!
Ask your child the following questions:
  • Can you tell me 3 words that are spelt with "oi" and 3 words that are spelt with "oy"?
  • Can you use some of these words in a few sentences?
  • What are some new words that you have learned to spell recently?

Literacy

We have been learning about personal narratives. A personal narrative is a story about a real experience from a person's life, written from their own perspective. The students worked hard to write their own personal narratives, sharing memories and experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them as it was really nice to learn more about their lived experiences!

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What is one thing that makes a good personal narrative?
  • What did you write about for your personal narratives?
  • How is a personal narrative different from an opinion writing piece?
Math

Students began learning about 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes. They explored and identified common 2D shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles, as well as 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones. Students discussed the attributes of each shape, including the number of sides, vertices (corners), faces, and edges. Through hands-on activities, sorting tasks, and shape investigations, they developed their ability to recognize, compare, and describe shapes in both classroom materials and everyday objects.

Here is a video about shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes

Students also had the opportunity to measure their own stuffies and engage in a variety of measurement and comparison activities. They used a ruler to measure their stuffed animals and compared their measurements with those of their classmates. Through this fun, hands-on experiences, students practiced using measurement vocabulary such as longer, shorter, taller, and smaller while developing their understanding of size and comparison. Students had a blast with this activity! As we still have some work to do for this activity, students are encouraged to bring their stuffies on Monday as well if it is possible.

Ask your child the following questions:

  • What is the difference between a 2D and a 3D shape?
  • Where have you seen shapes in real life?
  • What is a vertex?
