   June 1-June 4

Phonics

This week in phonics, we have been practicing the vowel team "ea" with a short e sound (e.g., head, feather, breath) and the vowel team "a" with a short o sound (e.g., water, wash, father). Our spelling test based on these vowel teams, will take place on Monday, June 8, 2026. Please encourage your child to practice these spellings!

Next week, students will not receive a new Roll and Read sheet. Instead, we will be spending some time reviewing reading comprehension skills by practicing how to answer questions based on a text. Students will use comprehension strategies such as making predictions, identifying key details, making connections, drawing inferences, and finding evidence in the text to support their answers.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What are 3 words that are have the short e ("ea") spelling? Can you spell them?
  • What are 3 words that have the short o spelling ("o")?
  • Can you write a few sentences with some of these words?

Literacy

Students have been learning the components of a letter, including the date, greeting, body, closing, and signature. Next week, they will apply these skills by writing their own letters.

Ask your child the following questions:
  • What are the different parts of a letter?
  • What are some different greetings you could use for a letter?
  • Why is it important to sign your name at the end of a letter?
Math

This week, students practiced subtraction with regrouping using base-ten blocks. We then moved on to practiced column addition with and without regrouping, as well as column subtraction without regrouping. Next week, we will focus on column subtraction with regrouping. We will continue practicing these addition and subtraction strategies throughout the remainder of the month to build confidence and fluency.

Below are some videos to support their learning:

Subtraction with regrouping (base ten blocks)

Column Addition with Regrouping

We have also begun learning about measurement. Students have been learning to compare the lengths and sizes of different objects using appropriate measurement vocabulary.

Ask your child the following questions:

  • Why must we line up numbers according to hundreds, tens, and ones when doing column addition and column subtraction?
  • Can you add 62 + 29 using column addition?
  • Why might we need to measure things?
Show and Tell

We have started Show and Tell presentations this week, and they will continue into next week. Students are really enjoying the opportunity to share their items with the class. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they speak in front of their peers.

Bus Registration for 2026-27 School Year

Transportation Registration is now available through your CBE Account.

Families must register each year if they require busing for their student.

Families must register by Sunday, June 14, 2026 for students to be added to routes for the start of the next school year.

CBE will accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed.

Confirmed routes are posted in August. For those who register after the June 14 deadline, it may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.

Transportation can be cancelled with no financial impact by submitting the cancellation form by Sept. 30, 2026. Fees will be added to accounts in October 2026.

Food Support

Did you know that the Breakfast Club of Canada has shared research demonstrating that 40% of Alberta’s children experience food insecurity? This means that 4 out of 10 children do not have access to food when they are hungry.

If your family is experiencing challenges with providing food for your children you can find help at Brown Bagging Calgary.

Complete this form for support and they can deliver lunches to McKenzie Towne School for your children. https://go.bb4ck.org/l/858913/2024-01-15/38fdbw You can also find out more information on their website https://bb4ck.org/
